This is the most direct rout to walk from Nebaj to Acul. Jennie and did it our first weekend in town, then stopped by Hacienda Mil Amores for a snack before catching a ride in a micro back to Nebaj. There are pleasant views from either side of the pass down into Nebaj and Acul.
Directions:
Start at the plaza, opposite the church. Face the church and then turn 90 degrees to your right and start walking. As you walk down this street you should pass Popi’s (Hostel, Restaurant, and Laundry) on the right. As well as the Oasis (Store and Cantina). After you cross the bridge you will come to a junction where you must either follow the main road to the left or veer slightly right onto a smaller road. Take the right. From here on just stick to the largest, straightest route. At the last major road junction (where another road merges from the right) you’ll see a kiosk on the right with a crude map of the route. The road will narrow and steepen as you go switching back and forth on the steepest terrain there are plenty of nice views back down on Nebaj and the sounds of the town will serenade you as you climb. At the top of the pass there is a little shaded pavilion with a bench where you can rest if you so desire. Then it’s down the other side into Acul from where you can catch a micro back to Nebaj. As you enter Acul generally walking down and to the right will get you into town (there’s not much to it). If you walk through town and and continue to the north (on the main rd to Nebaj) you’ll see a sign for and can take a left to head up to the Hacienda Mil Amores where you can find food, cabins for rent, cheese made on the premises (local famous), and all kinds of fowl (peacocks, chickens, doves, ducks, chickens…).
Micros leave frequently from Acul for Nebaj and cost around 5 Q.
Please note: These directions are imperfect, things change, and there are local guides available for hire in Nebaj.
